The planet Krypton faces destruction due to the destabilization caused by extensive core mining. Just before the planet's cataclysmic explosion, Jor-El, the chief advisor to Krypton’s supreme council, embeds the genetics codex into his infant son, Kal-El. He is the first naturally born Kryptonian in centuries. In a desperate attempt to save his son, Jor-El sends Kal-El in a spacecraft to Earth, moments before being killed by General Zod during a rebellion. Kal-El crash-lands in Kansas, where he’s found and adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent, who name him Clark. As Clark grows, his extraordinary abilities emerge, but Jonathan urges him to keep them hidden, even refusing Clark’s help in a tornado that tragically claims Jonathan’s life. Haunted by guilt, Clark spends years wandering the globe under various identities, searching for purpose.
Meanwhile, Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane is assigned to investigate a recently discovered Kryptonian scout ship in the Canadian Arctic. Disguised as a worker, Clark enters the ship and discovers its AI, modeled after Jor-El, who reveals that Clark’s purpose on Earth is to guide humanity. When Lois accidentally triggers the ship's defense systems, Clark uses his powers to save her. He dons the suit provided by the AI and begins to explore his flight abilities. Unable to convince her editor, Perry White, to publish a story about the encounter, Lois traces Clark back to Smallville, intending to reveal his identity. However, after learning of Jonathan Kent’s sacrifice, Lois decides to drop the story, leaving Clark’s secret intact, though raising Perry’s suspicions.
