The Rambo series has struggled in recent years, and the only way for Rambo 6 to succeed may be to take a page from the Rocky playbook and move on from Sylvester Stallone as the lead. Both franchises are closely associated with Stallone, but while Creed (2015) wisely shifted him to a supporting role, Rambo: Last Blood (2019) made the misstep of keeping the then 76-year-old actor front and center.
The original Rambo film, First Blood, introduced John Rambo, a Vietnam veteran forced into conflict with a small-town police force after returning home. Although it was meant to be a standalone film, the series has since expanded to five movies, but many feel the sequels were unnecessary. The latest entry, Rambo: Last Blood, was both a critical and commercial disappointment, signaling that the franchise has lost its direction. However, it's not beyond saving. For Rambo 6 to work, the franchise needs to follow Rocky's example by evolving and handing the torch to a new generation.
